The detail that matters most: these effects showed up at carbon dioxide and particulate levels common in ordinary offices and homes, not just extreme ones. And they showed up in healthy, younger adults. This isn’t a fringe effect in vulnerable people. It’s a measurable dip in thinking, in normal indoor spaces, in normal people.

Why an unventilated room does this

When a room is closed and occupied, carbon dioxide accumulates. CO2 itself is part of the story, and it’s also a proxy for how little fresh air is exchanging. Add the fine particulates that build up indoors, and the air you’re breathing by mid-afternoon in a sealed room is measurably different from the air you started with.

Your body notices. The crash you’re attributing to a sandwich may track more closely with the fact that you’ve been in the same unventilated room for four hours.

The tell: when and where it happens

The useful question isn’t just “do I crash” but “when, and where.” If the fog reliably hits in the afternoon, at home or at a particular desk, and eases when you step outside or move to a different space, that pattern points at the environment. Timing and location are how a symptom points back to a place.

What to actually do

Move air, deliberately. Open a window. Crack the door. Run whatever ventilation you have. If you work in a sealed room, make fresh-air breaks a real part of the day rather than something you do when you remember.

Get outside at the crash. A ten-minute walk outdoors isn’t just a mental break — you’re literally breathing different air. People often read the recovery as “the walk cleared my head.” Part of it is that it cleared your lungs.

Filter what you can’t ventilate. Where opening windows isn’t an option, a good air filter run consistently lowers the particulate load you’re taking on.

Watch the crowded, closed room. Meetings in small sealed rooms are a CO2 accumulation machine. If you fade in long meetings, that’s not just boredom.

The honest bottom line

Your afternoon crash has several possible causes, and lunch is only one of them. Indoor air is a real, measurable, and badly overlooked input into how clearly you think — and unlike most causes of fatigue, it’s one you can change in about thirty seconds by opening a window.
