Mold in Your Home: What the Evidence Actually Says (and What It Doesn't)

Search “mold in your home” and you’ll meet two internets. One says mold is quietly destroying your health and sells you a protocol to fix it. The other says it’s basically harmless unless you can see a black wall. Both are wrong, and the gap between them is where most people get lost.

Here is the honest version, drawn from what the evidence actually supports.

What damp and mold are genuinely linked to

The strongest, most consistent finding is respiratory. The World Health Organization’s review of indoor dampness and mould found sufficient evidence linking damp indoor environments to upper-respiratory symptoms, cough, wheeze, and the worsening of asthma in people who are sensitised. Later reviews of the epidemiological literature reached the same place: dampness and visible mould show consistent associations with respiratory and allergic effects.

So if you live somewhere damp and you have recurring congestion, a stuffy nose that never quite clears, or asthma that flares at home, that is one of the best-evidenced connections in this whole field. And it is about the building, not a weakness in you.

What’s real but less certain

Beyond the respiratory picture, many people report fatigue, brain fog, and a general sense of feeling unwell in damp or water-damaged buildings. These experiences are real. What’s less settled is the causal chain. Mainstream bodies reviewing the evidence did not find it strong enough to firmly attribute non-respiratory, whole-body symptoms to mould exposure in the way the respiratory links can be attributed.

That doesn’t mean those symptoms aren’t happening or aren’t connected. It means the science hasn’t nailed the mechanism the way it has for congestion and wheeze. An honest guide tells you that, rather than selling you certainty it hasn’t earned.

The one thing everyone agrees on

Across every credible source, the first step is the same: reduce the source. Fix the moisture, address the damp, and where there’s significant growth, get professional remediation. No supplement, drink, or protocol substitutes for this. If the damp conditions remain, nothing you take internally outpaces the incoming exposure.

Humidity is the upstream cause. Mould needs moisture to establish, which is why keeping indoor humidity in a sensible range (the EPA generally advises keeping it below around 50 percent) removes one of the main conditions it depends on. A cheap hygrometer tells you where you stand.

What to actually do

Start with what costs nothing and works regardless of what any test would show:

Move air. Open windows when the outdoor air is clean, run exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms. Ventilation clears more accumulated indoor load than most people realise.

Manage moisture. Keep humidity down, fix leaks promptly, dry damp spots fast. Damp is the precondition; remove it and you remove the problem’s foundation.

Get eyes on it if you suspect more. Musty smell, a history of water damage, visible growth in hidden spots — these warrant a professional assessment. And critically: if you suspect significant mould, don’t disturb it yourself. Disturbing growth can release more into the air. That’s a job for someone qualified.

Where testing fits

You can test your home and you can test your body, but be clear-eyed about what each tells you. Home testing and urinary mycotoxin testing exist, but interpretation is genuinely contested and best done with a practitioner who can put results in context rather than alarm you with a number. Testing is useful when it guides action with expert help — not as a standalone verdict.

The honest bottom line

Damp, mouldy buildings are real, and their respiratory effects are well-established. The broader whole-body picture is real to many people and less certain in the science. The response is the same either way: reduce the moisture, ventilate, and bring in a professional for anything significant. That’s not the exciting answer. It’s the true one.
